How to Set Up a Pickleball Court in Your Driveway

A driveway, a cul-de-sac or a backyard slab can host a real pickleball court. Here's how to set one up in an afternoon.

Court size

  • Regulation court: 20 ft wide × 44 ft long.
  • Kitchen (non-volley zone): 7 ft from the net on each side.
  • Ideal playing area: about 30 × 60 ft, so players have room behind the baseline. Smaller spaces still work great for casual games.

Net height

The net is 36 in high at the sidelines and 34 in at the center. Portable nets are pre-set to the right height, which is why a portable net kit is the fastest way to start.

Marking the lines

  • Painter's tape or sidewalk chalk works for a temporary court.
  • Measure the corners first, then snap the lines between them.
  • Mark the kitchen line clearly: it's the most important line in the game.

Surface and safety

Sweep away gravel and leaves, check for cracks, and keep cars and garden hoses well clear of the court. Outdoor balls are designed for concrete and asphalt.

Make it a party

A few extra balls, a ball hopper and a scoreboard turn a driveway court into the neighborhood's favorite hangout.
