Never played? Perfect. Here's everything you need to know in 3 minutes, and exactly what to get (and what to skip).
1. What is pickleball, really?
Think tennis meets ping-pong on a badminton-sized court. You play with solid paddles and a light plastic ball with holes, usually in doubles. The court is small, rallies are long, and beginners can have real fun from game one. That's why it's the fastest-growing sport in America.
2. The only 3 rules you need on day one
- Serve underhand, diagonally, and let it bounce once.
- Let it bounce twice: let the serve bounce before returning it, then let the return bounce before the serving team hits it. After these two bounces, either team can volley outside the kitchen.
- Stay out of the Kitchen: the 7 ft zone next to the net. You can't volley (hit without a bounce) while standing in it.
Games go to 11, win by 2. Only the serving team scores. That's it. You're ready.
3. What do I actually need?
- No court nearby? The Backyard Court Kit (net + 4 paddles + balls) turns any driveway into a regulation-width court in minutes.
- Balls: a bag of 12 outdoor balls lasts a whole season of casual play.
- Practicing alone? The Home Training Bundle (wall target + solo trainer + quiet foam balls).
- Comfort upgrades: a fresh overgrip, a visor and a cooling towel make long sessions a lot nicer.
4. Paddle jargon, decoded
- Carbon face: textured surface that adds spin and control. A common upgrade after your first few months.
- Fiberglass/wood face: more pop, more forgiving. Perfect for starting out and casual play.
- 16mm core: thicker = softer, more control. The sweet spot for most players.
- Indoor vs outdoor balls: outdoor balls have 40 smaller holes and are heavier to handle wind. Indoor balls have 26 bigger holes.
5. Your first week plan
- Day 1: Find a local court (search "pickleball near me") or set up at home.
- Day 2-3: Practice soft "dinks" over the net. Control beats power.
- Day 4+: Join an open play session. Pickleball players are famously welcoming to newbies.
